3mm double side sublimation MDF board features a specialized polymer coating applied uniformly to both panel surfaces. The water-based coating is formulated to accept dye sublimation inks and form a permanent bond when subjected to controlled heat and pressure. The coating layer maintains a consistent thickness of 20-25 microns across the entire sheet surface, with coating weight controlled at 35-40 grams per square meter per side. The formulation is free of heavy metals and complies with EN 71-3 safety standards for decorative materials.
Before coating application, the MDF core undergoes three stages of sanding: 180 grit, 240 grit, and 320 grit, resulting in a surface roughness of Ra 1.6-2.0 micrometers. A seal coat is applied first to prevent coating absorption into the wood fiber, followed by the top sublimation receptive layer. Panels are cured in a controlled temperature tunnel at 60°C for 45 minutes after coating application. The finished surface is matte white with a 60-degree gloss value of 5-8 units, providing optimal contrast for transferred images.

The receptive coating supports color resolution up to 1200 DPI when used with compatible sublimation inks and transfer papers. Transferred images achieve a color gamut coverage of approximately 85% of sRGB, with consistent color density across the panel surface. The coating resists bleeding and feathering during transfer, maintaining sharp edge definition for text and fine graphic elements. Transferred images exhibit lightfastness rated at 4-5 on the Blue Wool scale when used in interior applications.
The boards are compatible with flatbed heat presses and calendar transfer systems used in commercial sublimation operations. The coating works with all major dye sublimation ink formulations including water-based and solvent-based variants designed for hard surface transfer. Panels can be cut to custom sizes before sublimation using standard panel saws or CNC routers, with sealed edges recommended for applications requiring extended moisture resistance.
These panels are used for personalized photo panels, interior signage, wayfinding signs, and point-of-purchase displays. Both sides accept sublimation, enabling dual-sided designs for items such as hanging ornaments and two-sided display pieces.
The 3mm core is engineered to resist warping and delamination during standard heat press cycles. Panels maintain flatness within 0.5mm per linear meter after a 90-second press at 190°C when supported on a flat heat press platen. The core density is uniform across the panel to prevent uneven heat transfer that could cause image density variations. No pre-heating is required before pressing for standard ambient humidity conditions below 60% RH.
Coating weight and surface roughness are tested on every 50th panel during production. Test transfers are performed at the start of each production run to verify color acceptance and transfer performance. Panels are inspected for coating defects, dust inclusions, and surface blemishes before packaging. Each production batch is assigned a lot number for traceability in case of process adjustments.
Minimum order quantity is one 20-foot container, containing approximately 30,000 sheets of 1220mm × 2440mm panel. Mixed orders with other MDF products are accepted to fill container capacity. Standard lead time is 10-15 days for standard stock panels. Panels are packaged on pallets with protective paper between sheets to prevent surface scratching during transport. Sample sheets in A4 size are provided for testing, with freight charges covered by the buyer.
Technical guidance is available for press setting adjustments based on specific equipment and ink combinations. Process recommendations are provided for different environmental conditions and production volumes. Custom cutting services are available for pre-cut blank sizes to reduce processing steps for commercial operations.
Initial testing at 185°C for 75 seconds at 35 psi provides a baseline for most ink and paper combinations. Adjustments of 5-10 seconds may be needed based on individual press calibration and image density requirements.
Double-sided transfer requires two separate press cycles, pressing one side at a time. Protective paper should be used on the already pressed side during the second cycle to prevent ink offset onto the platen.
Panels are shipped with a low-tack protective film on both coated surfaces to prevent scratches during handling and cutting. The film should be removed immediately before sublimation pressing.
